Statement from the WBA on recent
political advertisement by Kerry Healey
The most recent political ad by
Kerry Healey attempts to wield fear as a political weapon. The Women’s Bar
Association, though a non-partisan organization, feels compelled to speak out
against this type of political advertising as highly offensive to attorneys,
women, and the voters of Massachusetts.
The WBA cares deeply about women’s right and safety. We have a long history of
effective and serious advocacy to ensure that our justice system is responsive
to women, particularly victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our
advocacy, however, does not rely on destroying or diminishing the importance of
fundamental principles that underlie our justice system, including the right to
zealous advocacy.
Political campaigning must not be used to undercut the work of lawyers or divert
attention away from the real challenges women face in our society, such as
domestic violence, sexual assaults, equal pay, job opportunities, and affordable
housing and child care. The citizens of Massachusetts deserve more than rhetoric
and exploitation. The Women’s Bar Association encourages all candidates to focus
on the specific steps they will take to effect change in the system and in
society.
